StarNow:
Have you always been interested in acting? How did you get your start in the industry?
Antonia:
Yes I’ve always wanted to be an actress. I started off when I was 11. My friend’s neighbour was an acting agent, so I got signed up to her. I started auditioning and got my first part on the TV series Mirror Mirror II a few months later.
StarNow:
Antonia, you have starred in a number of TV series including The Tribe, Power Rangers and Outrageous Fortune – can you tell us what a typical day involves on the set of a TV series?
Antonia:
I arrive in the morning around 6:30am, put on my costume for the first scene, get my hair and makeup done (this takes about 30 minutes), then we start filming at 7:30am. We block the scene, then the lighting and camera department work out their moves etc and we (the actors) come back on set and shoot the scene. Each scene takes about two hours and we film for 10.45 hours a day.
StarNow:
Has Loretta, your character on Outrageous Fortune, been involved in a storyline which has challenged you as an actor? Can you share some tips on how to get through challenging or difficult scenes?
Antonia:
Prepare really well. Know the script back to front, know your emotional journey really well and ask for help! I ask the other actors like Robyn Malcolm for advice all the time. They’re always happy to help thankfully!
StarNow:
Loretta is a complex character, what was it about the character that you were drawn to? Are there any similarities between the two of you?
Antonia:
Her intellect. She’s really sharp, which gives her a lot of scope so it’s always really interesting to play her. As to similarities…not too many really! We’re pretty different in almost every way.
StarNow:
Outrageous Fortune has won a number of awards over the past few years – how does it feel to be part of such a successful show?
Antonia:
I feel so lucky and so privileged to be part of it. I really am truly grateful.
StarNow:
Now that your careers are taking off, are there any plans to go abroad?
Antonia:
Yes, I’m off to New York next week actually to do an acting course. I don’t have any plans to move permanently yet, although I hope to be working overseas within the next five years.
StarNow:
Are there any directors you’d like to work with?
Antonia:
I’d love to work with Peter Jackson and Niki Caro (as everyone would of course).
StarNow:
Who are your role models? Are there actors in the industry you look up to and admire?
Antonia:
Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep – both amazing actresses who make really interesting career choices and are still really grounded and normal!
StarNow:
Do you have any advice for you actors trying to break into the industry? Do you have a few tips you can share with us?
Antonia:
Get an agent and do as much work as you can. Even if it’s not in a professional production, every bit of experience will make you a better actor and you never know who you might meet.
